What are venture capital funds?
Venture capital ("VC") funds are pooled investment vehicles that specialise in providing financing to startups and early-stage companies with high growth potential.
Managed by professional venture capitalists, these funds invest in businesses across various industries, (but primarily in technology and technology-enabled companies), in exchange for equity or ownership stakes.
Venture capital funds aim to support innovative companies that may be too risky for traditional bank loans or standard investment avenues, helping them scale their operations, develop products, and expand into new markets.
The capital for these funds comes from limited partners (LPs) including institutional investors, such as pension funds and endowments, as well as high-net-worth individuals.
Venture capital funds not only offer financial resources but also provide strategic guidance, industry connections, and operational expertise to their portfolio companies.
By investing in a diverse array of startups, these funds seek to generate significant returns for their investors, typically over a five to ten-year investment horizon, through successful exits via acquisitions or initial public offerings (IPOs).
